Baden-Baden (Aquae Aureliae)

This marvellous town offers numerous cultural events, enjoyable trips and peaceful walks along the Oos river and the Lichtentaler Allee to the Cistercian monastery at the end of the alluring valley.

Baden-Baden was discovered two thousand years ago (in the Vespasian era : 69-79 A.D.) as a health resort and spa town and has been able to maintain its charm until today.

Today's "Caracalla Thermen" are named for Emperor Caracalla, the "Pious and Blessed" who rebuilt the warm baths and gave Vicus Aquae a long period of bloom.

Places worth seeing in Baden-Baden:

Below the Friedrichbad there is the access to the Roman bath ruins. This so-called soldiers' bath (approx. 70-260 A. D.) has all elements of a classical Roman bath. There are planks over the heating facilities on which the visitor can walk, using an audio device for an optimal information tour.

A visit to the baths quarter is also worthwile, including the former monastery of the Holy Grave with the monastery church, the grotto with the "Fettquelle" spring (approx. 65°) and the former steam bath (today a place for exhibitions), built by Heinrich Hübsch.

On the market place, the marks of the former emperor's bath can be recognized. Via the Schloss-Staffeln we come to the market place and New Castle and finally the Florentiner Berg (created in 1981 on the occasion of the state flower exhibition) with orange trees, cypresses, sour orange trees, lemon trees, magnolias, camellias, figtrees, pine trees, hemp palms, silk trees, various types of bamboo...

In the spa area, the Konversationshaus, theatre, casino and Trinkhalle are also worth seeing. In the open columned hall the local legends are illustrated.

A visit to the Russian Church (1882), the town museum in the Alleehaus, the Stourdza Chapel, the spa park in the area of the Solms lake and Solms castle and the monastery with its interior court are recommended. The rose garden confirms the reputation of the town als the town of Roses where each summer the famous rose contests are held.

So far for a brief overwiew. Special highlights are visits to cafés and restaurants and more trips to near and far destinations.
