This stalactite cave in Buchen-Eberstadt was discovered in a shell-limestone quarry by pure chance and surprised not only the excavators with its breathtaking geological beauty. The cave is a natural monument unique in South Germany.
The cave is situated on the brink of the Odenwald in so-called lower shell-limestone. Experts estimate its age at 1-2 million years. Visitors are impressed by the wealth of forms of the stalactites and stalagmites. Each formation has been given a name in this fairytale scenery. The "White Woman" of Eberstadt, the "Elephant's Trunk", the "Vesuvius" and the "Wedding Cake" are unforgettable with their unbelievably diverse forms. See for yourself.
The cave is easily accessible on a path of about 600 m length through the subterranean shell limestone formations with a humidity of 95% and a permanent temperature of 11°C. People in wheelchairs or who have restricted mobility can participate in this guided tour of approx. 45 minutes without problems.
An informative geological trail with signs explaining geology, landscape and ecology offers more interesting knowledge of our immediate area and is a perfect supplement to the guided cave tour.
At the end of this excursion we can either take you on a guided tour through the town or a stroll through the historical centre of Buchen with the "Platz am Bild", the tower and the Mariensäule. Undisturbed by transit traffic, we can admire the half-timber buildings, the village square or the gardens belonging to the Buchen-Eberstadt palace.
