Half-Timber Town Eppingen

The first official mention of Eppingen dates from the year 985.

This marvellous town in the centre of the Kraichgau area was largely spared the effects of the Thirty-Years' War and the Palatine War of Succession. Numerous half-timber houses from the middle ages and the transition period to the Renaissance and later to the Baroque Era have been preserved. On our walk around the town we can see a largely complete picture of the old town.

Around the Pfeiffertum - the landmark of the town - there are splendidly (and unfortunately less splendidly) restored Alemannic and Franconian half-timber buildings that even today give the impression of the mediaeval imperial town from the Gothic to the Baroque Era.

We are amazed at the "Alte Post", Erkerhaus, Kaufmannshaus, Ackerbürgerhaus, Ratsschänke, Specht'sches Haus, Alter Universität (museum), Delphinhaus, Bäckerhaus (built in 1412 and the oldest half-timber house in the Kraichgau area!), Baumann'sches Haus, Schwebegiebelhaus and the Catholic Altstädter Kirche (late Gothic style) with its old wall paintings.

In addition to the town and half-timber museum "Alte Universität", there is the Bauernmuseum in Eppingen-Richen and the Steinhauerhaus in Eppingen-Mühlbach. Please ask us for the opening hours.
