Erbach was first mentioned in the year 1095 and is situated at the little river Mümling, a name of Celtic origin. The little town arose around the so-called "Städtel" and now the palace. During a walk around the old centre, visitors are impressed by the Baroque palace "Altes Rathaus", the orangerie, the pleasure garden, market place, town church, Tempelhaus and half-timber houses.
Franz I. zu Erbach-Erbach (1754-1823) introduced the art of ivory carving in Erbrach. The ivory carving handicraft of Erbach became famous through the "Rose of Erbach" in 1873 at the World Exhibition in Vienna.
The German Ivory Museum is the only specialized museum of this type in the world. Special exhibitions with interesting topics make a visit to this museum an unforgettable experience. A guided tour including a visit to the museum workshop familarizes us with the art of these carvers and turners.
