Almond blossom festival and a lot more...
Gimmeldingen is situated north of Neustadt on the edge of the hilly Haardt region. It is an officially recognized recreational area and older than Neustadt itself. The Romans recognized that the location of the town on a slope and the mediterranean climate offered ideal conditions for growing wine. "Grimmeldinger Meerspinne" wine has made this town famous far beyond the German borders.
Not only the wine but also the early almond blossoming are characteristic of the town's charm. Every year in March, when the town has been transformed into a pale-pink sea of blossoms, thousands of people gather to enjoy the event.
Gimmeldingen is a typical vintners' village with old lanes, sandstone walls and archways wreathed with grapevines. It is not only a tourist attraction but also a favourite place for artists, painters and gourmets.
You can walk through the vineyards and visit the remnants of an ancient fortress from which you have a fantastic view over the plain.
During construction works in 1926 a temple was discovered between Loblocher and Kurpfalzstraße. The temple was built by the Roman Materninius Faustinus in 325 in the honour of Mithras, the ancient Persian God of Light. The temple on the site of the discovery is a reconstruction while the original can be seen in the Speyer Historical Museum.
Starting from Gimmeldingen, you can take wonderful walks. Whether you chose the Mühlenwanderweg along the Mussbach brook in the Gimmeldinger valley, or through the Benjetal to the Silbertal valley, or along the slope of the Haardt between the vineyards and forest to Deidesheim depends, of course, on your physical fitness (for persons in wheelchairs this is recommended only with restrictions).
What would Gimmeldingen be without its restaurants and wineries? Special dishes and typical Palatine dishes are offered in Mugler's Kutscherhaus, Christmann's Meerspinnkeller, Gimmeldinger Winzer, Loblocher Gutsausschank, Restaurant Weinstuben Kurpfalzterrassen, Gimmeldinger Tal, Talmühle and Kommerzienrat − the latter one being famous for its wine. Nearly 300 different wines are offered − including nearly all famous wine-growers of the region. We also offer special gourmet and wine-tasting tours in the Palatine area.
Altogether this is a tour which can be planned very individually. You invite your friends − we will drive and accompany you!
