Maulbronn monastery

No medieval monastery north of the Alps has been better preserved than the Maulbronn monastery. For this reason it was included in the Unesco list of world cultural heritage in 1993. Its ascetic founder was Bernhard von Clairvaux.

The history of the Cistercian monastery commences in 1147, when 12 monks from the Alsace built a monastery in the remoteness of the Salzach valley, observing the Cistercian building rules established in the Burgundy. For almost 400 years, the monks formed the entire cultural landscape. The monastery was abandoned after the Reformation by Duke Christoph von Württemberg and became a Protestant monastery school in 1556. After secularization, the monastery became a Protestant theological seminary and serves this purpose still today. Important authors and scientists such as Johannes Kepler, Friederich Hölderlin and Hermann Hesse attended this school.
