No medieval monastery north of the Alps has been better preserved than the Maulbronn monastery. For this reason it was included in the Unesco list of world cultural heritage in 1993. Its founder was Bernhard von Clairvaux.
History alive: In 1147, 12 monks from the Alsace built a monastery in the remoteness of the Salzach valley. For almost 400 years, the monks formed the entire cultural landscape. In 1556, the monastery became a Protestant monastery school. It is still used today. In a playful way, the children become familiar with important authors and scientists such as Johannes Kepler, Friederich Hölderlin and Hermann Hesse who attended school here.
